Dig Records, originally called Ultra Records , was founded in Los Angeles in 1955 by Frank Gallo, Eddie Mesner, Leo Mesner and Johnny Otis . The name change took place in February 1956, probably because of the existence of another label called Ultra . The Mesner brothers were also the owners of the Aladdin Records label . A total of 41 singles and four long-playing records were released on Dig Records . The musicians who released on the label included Johnny Otis ( Turtle Dove ) Tony Allen ( I Found an Angel ), Billy Mann ( Find Yourself Another Guy ), Arthur Lee Maye ( Wispering Wind , 1957), Larry Waters , Mel Williams , Preston Love , the Buddy Collette - Chico Hamilton Sextet (LP Tanganyika , 1956) and the Gerald Wiggins Trio (LP Wiggin with Wig , 1956). In 1957, Johnny Otis acquired sole ownership; The label's recordings were re-released on CD in the Dapper Cats, Groovy Tunes & Hot Guitars (Legendary Dig Masters) series .
