Direct question

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In contrast to the term indirect question, a direct question (= direct question sentence) is to be understood as a question that is expressed in a main sentence . A direct question is therefore formulated as an independent question sentence . These are so-called decision - making or supplementary questions .

Examples from German

Direct questions can be formulated in a number of ways. Examples of direct questions in German:

  • "Is Peter coming?" (Question with verb in top position)
  • "When is Peter coming?" (Question mark, introduced with question adverb / interrogative adverb )
  • "Who is coming?" (Question mark, introduced with question pronouns / interrogative pronouns )
  • "Peter is actually coming?" ( Question mark , which can only be recognized when spoken by the intonation and when written only by the question mark .)

features

Direct questions are therefore syntactically independent questions, that is, they are uttered as independent sentences. They are marked as question sentences by question words , verb formations, intonation or question marks.
