Dissociative Symptoms Questionnaire

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dissociative Experience Scale (DES) is a psychological questionnaire for recording dissociative symptoms via self- assessment in English. The English-language original version comes from Bernstein and Putnam from 1986. The German adaptation was published by Freyberger and colleagues in 1999 under the name Questionnaire on dissociative symptoms (FDS). A short form of the FDS with 20 questions (FDS-20) was developed to record limited time periods. A version for children and young people has also been developed under the name Adolescent Dissociative Experience Scale (A-DES). In 1999, Brunner et al. Published a German version under the name Skala Dissociative Experience (SDE-J).

The DES contains 28 questions. It provides a total point value and 4 sub-scale values.

The FDS consists of 44 questions, as it has been expanded by 16 questions in order to also do justice to the definition of dissociation in the ICD-10 . Most importantly, these questions involve the physical symptoms of dissociation. These include movement disorders, "pseudoepileptic" seizures and disorders of sensitivity and sensory functions.

The respondents should indicate on a scale between 0% and 100% how often they know the given examples of dissociative experiences in their everyday life. The time to complete is estimated at around 15 minutes. The FDS is evaluated via the formation of mean values, whereby values between 12 and 15 (according to Overkamp in press) could be interpreted as an indication of slight dissociation. A cut-off value between 25% and 30% is recommended for the German version , as the highest sensitivity and specificity have been determined for this. According to medical guidelines , the cut-off value of FDS and FDS-20 is 13 points and the value of DES is 15 points. This optimal cut-off value was determined by Rodewald and colleagues in 2006 using an ROC analysis . However, the diagnosis of a dissociative disorder should be made through a diagnostic interview.
