Domino transplant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A domino transplant is the transplantation of at least two organs between several people. It occurs when an actually healthy organ has to be removed from an organ recipient for operational reasons. This organ can then be replanted into another recipient.

In the case of a special metabolic dysfunction of the liver ( amyloidosis ), a domino transplant can only take place with this organ. If the amyloidosis patient is given a new liver, they are cured. His own liver is still fully functional except for a metabolic defect. This defect leads to deposits in the body, which only become noticeable after 20 to 30 years. Older patients who are at risk of dying without a new liver can be transplanted with an amyloidotic liver if there is no other option due to an organ deficiency.
