Dot system

Dotal system is a term from family law , there from property law . It describes a matrimonial property regime that was widespread in Germany until the beginning of the 20th century . With the entry into force of the German Civil Code (BGB) in 1900, the numerous regional and content-related property rights disappeared, including the dotal system.

Until then, the dotal system had applied to around three million inhabitants in Westphalia, Pomerania, Hanover, Mecklenburg, Braunschweig, Kurhessen and parts of Bavaria. It was taken from Roman law . Under this system there was a kind of fiduciary transfer of the woman's property. With the marriage , the man received the wife's dowry for administration and was allowed to use it with restrictions. Proceeds from the dowry were used to cover the marital expenses. In the event of a divorce , the dowry had to be returned.
