It is published annually by Verlag Berlitz in English and its form and content are controversial. The German edition of the book had the shipping company Peter Deilmann judicially stopped in 1998 after an evaluation that was wrongly researched. She has not appeared since. Occasional criticism also comes from shipping companies whose ship has been rated even though Ward has not yet been spotted on board. In addition, many ships that have been rated are not re-classified later. Experts also criticize obvious errors that have not yet been corrected after several editions. The reputation of the book in the professional world is therefore controversial.

According to his own statements, Ward visits around 40 to 70 ships every year and has meanwhile undertaken more than 900 cruises (including more than 150 Atlantic crossings) and spent more than 5000 days at sea.
