Draumkvedet

Draumkvedet ( The Dream Poem ) is a ballad poem by an unknown author from Norway . The poem is considered one of Norway's most important medieval ballads.

Emergence

It is believed to have originated in the Middle Ages . Some sources assume a date of origin between the 10th and 12th centuries. Elsewhere there is the statement “around 1300 (maybe later)”. The poem was first transmitted orally and only recorded in writing in the 19th century. Well-known versions are by Magnus Brostrup Landstad and Moltke Moe .

The protagonist, Olav Åsteson , falls into a twelve-day sleep on Christmas Eve . In his dream he sees purgatory , heaven and hell and the day of judgment . On Epiphany he wakes up and rides to a church where he describes his vision .
