Torque arm

Torque support on a shift hub

A torque arm is a machine element and, as an independent component, can be part of the transmission and engine suspensions.

The task of the torque arm is to absorb the differential torque of the input and output and to introduce it into the supporting structure (e.g. housing or frame).

Applications can be found, for example, in general mechanical engineering, vehicle technology or on the rear wheel hubs of bicycles with gear hubs and / or brakes (such as drum or coaster brakes ). It is a lever that connects the axle outside of its pivot point to the frame. If the torque arm is not installed correctly, the gearshift or brake may suddenly fail under load.
