Three friends of the cold season

The three friends of the cold season ( Chinese 岁寒 三 友 Suìhán sānyǒu, Japanese 歳 寒 三 友 Saikan no sanyū, Japanese also "pine-bamboo-plum" (松竹梅; Chō-chiku-bai)) are the following three in East Asia: Bamboo and plum.

The evergreen pine, evergreen bamboo and plum blooming in February delight the people of East Asia during the cold season. In Japan in particular, one still thinks of the Three Friends , in which they are put up for New Year in two containers that flank the entrance of the house as “Kadomatsu” (門 松).
