Drip Torch
A Drip Torch (to German: Dripping torch ) is a tool for corridor and forest fires , primarily in fire-fighting units in the United States and Australia . It is used for the controlled burnout of vegetation when creating firebreaks or safety zones , as well as for setting backfire . Drip Torches come in different sizes and volumes.
The Drip Torch is filled with a gasoline / diesel mixture, which is ignited by a wick when it leaks . The flow rate can be regulated using an air valve. A coil in the outlet pipe and a ball check valve prevent the fire from spreading into the interior of the container.
A special version of the Drip Torch is the Heli-Torch , an oversized version for use by helicopters .
