A printer's tool used to color the printing form is called a printer pad. Usually two bales were used together.

“The journeyman or bale master held one in each hand and picked up paint from the paint table with them in circular movements, then both bales were rubbed against each other to ensure even color distribution. Then both balls were passed over the mold, again with even circular movements, whereby the paint was only allowed to reach the surface of the set without smearing it. "

The printer bales consisted of a wooden handle and the ball wood made of linden, alder or maple, a light and tough wood. The ball wood in the shape of a bowl-shaped disc was filled with wool or horsehair and covered with sheep , calf or dog leather .
