Career

Beginnings in motorsport

Like almost all racing drivers, his career began in karting , which he practiced from 1993 to 2000. In 2001 he became champion in the US Barber Formula Dodge East . At the end of the year he also drove in the Italian Formula Renault winter championship, in which he finished fifth overall. In 2002 he switched to the British Formula Renault and was 20th overall. In the same year he drove two races in the Formula Renault 2000 Eurocup and at the end of the year in the winter championship of the British Formula 3 championship , in which he won the runner-up title. In 2003 he drove in the British Formula 3 championship, in which he was champion with ten victories in the national class. In 2004 he switched to the main series of the British Formula 3 championship for the P1 Motorsport team . Viso, who won a race and finished eleventh in the championship at the end of the season, left the series after twelve races to switch to Formula 3000 .

Formula 3000 and GP2 series

From the fifth race of the 2004 Formula 3000 season, Viso replaced Rodrigo Ribeiro at Durango Corse . He scored seven points in four out of six races and was twelfth overall at the end of the season.

In 2005 Viso switched to the GP2 series , the successor to Formula 3000, and became a teammate of Hiroki Yoshimoto at BCN Competición . After scoring only five points on the first ten race weekends, Viso was on the podium three times in the last four races of the season and was twelfth overall at the end of the season.

In 2006 Viso started its second GP2 season with iSport International . While he left his first team-mate Tristan Gommendy clearly behind, he had to admit defeat to his second team-mate Timo Glock , who had replaced Gommendy after five race weekends. Nevertheless, the 2006 season was his most successful season in the GP2 series. With two wins he finished sixth overall at the end of the season. A personal highlight of the season for Viso was his participation in Friday training for the Brazilian Grand Prix in the 2006 Formula 1 season , in which he drove the third Spyker MF1 Racing car .

In 2007 Viso initially did not find a cockpit, but after the third event in the GP2 series he replaced the unsuccessful Sérgio Jimenez at Racing Engineering . He had a serious accident at the main race in Magny-Cours when his car took off after touching Michael Ammermüller's car and hit a boundary wall. Viso remained almost uninjured and only suffered bruises on his arms and a slight concussion. On the following race weekend he was represented by Filipe Albuquerque . He then took part in the races at the Nürburgring , but was then replaced by Marcos Martínez . In 2007 Viso also took part in two races of the International GT Open .

IndyCar Series

After the reunification of the Champ Car and the IndyCar Series , he drove in 2008 for HVM Racing in the IndyCar Series. Viso, who has been competing under the name EJ Viso since 2008, achieved his best result at the second race in rainy St. Petersburg , where he achieved fourth place. At the end of the season he finished 18th overall. In 2009 Viso stayed with HVM Racing and was again 18th in the overall ranking. In 2010 , the Venezuelan switched to KV Racing Technology . After a weak start to the season, he achieved his first podium finish in Newton in third place in the IndyCar Series and at the end of the season he finished 17th in the drivers' standings. In 2011 Viso completed another season in the IndyCar Series. As the team was supported by Lotus Cars from this season on , it was renamed KV Racing Technology - Lotus before the season . As the worst driver of his team, he finished the season in 18th place overall. He also took part in a race in the Rolex Sports Car Series . For the 2012 season , Viso kept his IndyCar cockpit with KV Racing Technology, which started using Chevrolet engines this season . With a fifth place as the best result, Viso was beaten by his two teammates Tony Kanaan and Rubens Barrichello and finished the overall standings in 20th place. Viso also took part in a race in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) and won the PC classification.

In 2013 Viso moved to Andretti Autosport within the IndyCar series . HVM Racing was also involved in the use of his vehicle. Fourth in West Allis and fifth in Toronto , he made it into the top five twice. He achieved seven top 10 finishes. He did not take part in the last race of the season because of the flu. While his three Andretti teammates finished the season in the top 10 of the drivers' standings, Viso finished 15th in the overall standings.

Others

In 2012 Viso cooperated with the racing team Juncos Racing , which took part in the Star Mazda Series this season under the name Team Viso Venezuela .
