ER Nele , actually: Eva Renée Nele Bode (born March 17, 1932 in Berlin ; lives in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German sculptor , graphic artist , goldsmith , jewelry artist and designer .

life and work

ER Nele is the daughter of Marie-Louise (1908–1989) and Arnold Bode (1900–1977), the founders of documenta . She spent her childhood and youth in Kassel , which was badly damaged by the war .

After starting his studies in Berlin , E. R. Nele studied from 1951 to 1955 at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London with Richard Hamilton . In Berlin, she often stayed in a welding shop and learned how to work with iron and steel in addition to her studies. After staying in London, E. R. Nele moved to Paris and learned copper gravure printing in the Lacourière studio (1957 and 1958). She then studied at the University of Fine Arts with Professor Hans Uhlmann .

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, E. R. Nele first lived in Munich and then in Zurich , and since 1965 she has lived and worked as a freelance artist in Frankfurt am Main . Her studio and workshop are located in the Gallus . She also worked as a lecturer, with teaching assignments for metal sculpture in Salzburg , Frankfurt and Gießen .

She was a participant in documenta II (1959) and documenta III in 1964 in Kassel . She had and still has numerous solo and group exhibitions with her diverse works, for example in 2006 in the Active Museum Spiegelgasse in Wiesbaden. E. R. Neles sculptures can be found in numerous museums such as the Neue Pinakothek in Munich , in some renowned private collections and in public spaces . Her works include monumental steel sculptures as well as filigree brooches and pieces of jewelry.

One of her most important works is the installation The Ramp on the premises of the University of Kassel (see introductory picture). The ramp is a memorial for the deportees and victims of the Holocaust and the National Socialist regime from 1933 to 1945. The ramp consists of a dark brown painted, original wooden Reichsbahn freight car without windows with a wide ramp on which three empty figures appear , scary coats are located. In this installation E. R. Nele also dealt with traumatic childhood experiences, as she had to watch daily the transport of forced laborers from her grandparents' apartment in Kassel Fiedlerstrasse, who were crammed into cattle wagons onto the site of the former Henschel works in Kassel. The ramp was inaugurated on May 8, 1985, the 40th anniversary of the end of the war and liberation from National Socialism .

Objects

For more than forty years, the focus of ER Nele's artistic work has been the human being. It does not create an ideologically fixed image of people; it is more about making emotions, inner attitudes and social contexts visible by concentrating on the basic shapes of the human body. ER Nele sees herself as a political artist. She takes the risk of artistically reflecting on the Holocaust , for example with Die Rampe or with her fire pictures from the Holocaust series . She repeatedly deals with current political issues. And even objects of playful lightness such as their filigree stick figures Europeans are an attempt at an artistic response to social developments: individualization and solidarity.
