The period from 1965 to 1980 is considered to be the most successful in the company's history, EI Niš was the leading electronics company in Yugoslavia. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, however, EI Niš ran into economic difficulties.

The disintegration of Yugoslavia and the associated loss of the domestic Yugoslavian sales market brought the company to the brink of bankruptcy, and bankruptcy could only be stopped by state subsidies. Since 2006 the company has been in the process of so-called restructuring and is being privatized.
