The European Tire and Rim Technical Organization ( ETRTO ; German European tire and rim expert organization ) was founded in October 1964, but existed from 1956 to 1964 under the name European Tire and Wheel Technical Conference ( ETWTC , German European technical tire and Wheel conference ).

According to the ETRTO statutes of October 2008, it pursues the following objectives:

  • Promotion of the harmonization of national standards in order to achieve the interchangeability of tires , rims and valves in Europe in terms of assembly and application
  • Definition of common dimensions and load / air pressure assignments and application guidelines
  • Promotion of the unhindered exchange of technical information relating to tires, rims and valves

Because tires make a significant contribution to road safety, the ETRTO works with national and international organizations and legislative bodies in order to be able to give suitable recommendations.

The activities in the ETRTO are strictly limited to the technical aspects of tires, rims and valves, as far as they concern assembly and use.

Manufacturers of tires, rims and valves with a production facility in a country that signed the ECE regulations of 1958 or 1998 can become full members of the organization .
