The EU flag (or flag of the European Union ) is the flag of the European Union - a special use of the European flag on which it is based .
As the EU flag, it represents the official flagging of the European Union and its organizations. One use is, for example, the addition of the national emblem of EUFOR - temporary multinational military units of the European Union.
In 1983 the European Parliament decided to use the flag known up to then as the European flag as the flag for the European Communities . In 1985 it was adopted by the heads of state and government of the member states as the official symbol of what would later become the European Union.
