Individual funding programs

EXIST-Gründungskultur promotes projects from universities and non-university research institutions that set up a qualification and support offer for science-oriented start-ups. As part of the EXIST III funding program launched in 2007, 46 projects at 100 German universities and more than 60 non-university research institutions were supported and co-financed with funds from the European Social Fund . The content of this program is the establishment and further development of infrastructures and framework conditions for the systematic support of innovative business concepts and their consistent implementation.

In April 2010 the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology started the competition EXIST-Gründungskultur - Die Gründerhochschule as part of the “Gründerland Deutschland” initiative . 22 projects from German universities have prevailed. They applied with special strategies to promote start-ups and are now supporting founders with various offers, such as targeted events or advice and coaching offers. For this purpose, the universities have received around 45 million euros since the initiative began in 2010 (as of December 2015). Some of the projects will run until 2018. The competition was open to all public and private universities in Germany. In the coming years, new measures to improve the start-up climate and to spread entrepreneurship at German universities are to be supported.

The EXIST start-up grant enables the creation of a business plan within one year without any financial risk for the founding team. Students who are funded by EXIST through a start-up grant receive EUR 1,000 / month, technical staff EUR 2,000 / month, graduates EUR 2,500 / month and founders with a doctoral degree EUR 3,000 / month. The maximum funding period is one year. There is also money for coaching and material expenses. Per person there is up to 10,000 euros in material resources and a flat rate of 5,000 euros for coaching. For teams of three founders, this can result in a total of up to 35,000 euros. More than 1700 start-ups have already been implemented with the support of EXIST (as of December 2015).

Research teams whose start-up projects are risky and involve high development costs have been able to take advantage of the EXIST research transfer funding program since December 2008 . EXIST research transfer consists of two funding phases, whereby in the first phase the final research and development work before the company is founded at the university or research institution is supported with personnel and material costs. The projects are selected by an expert jury. In the 17 application rounds carried out so far between 2008 and the beginning of 2016, 261 projects were recommended for funding, around forty percent of them in the field of life science and medical technology .
