Earl of Cumberland
Earl of Cumberland was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .
Award and subordinate titles
It was created on June 18, 1525 for Henry Clifford, 11th Baron de Clifford . The title could only be passed on to male descendants of the 1st Earl. It went out when the 5th Earl died on December 11, 1643.
The first three Earls carried the inheritable title Baron de Clifford (created 1299) as a subordinate title. For the fifth earl, the title Baron Clifford , which can also be inherited in the female line, was newly created in 1628 , which he led as a subordinate title.
