Early Mabuza

Early Mabuza (* in Sophiatown ; † 1969 ) was a South African musician ( drummer , band leader) of modern jazz .

Mabuza played with Dollar Brand in the 1950s . Chris McGregor brought him as drummer in the sextet Blue Notes ; In 1963 he was part of McGregor's Castle Lager Big Band . In 1964 he successfully participated in the Castle Lager Jazz Festival with his own quartet . Then he formed the Early Mabuza Big Five ; his Big Five included Barney Rachabane , Ernest Mothle and Julian Bahula . In 1968 Winston Mankunku brought Mabuza's trio to record his successful album Yakhal'Nkomo .

Mabuza was married to the singer Busi Mhlongo , with whom he also performed. His sister was the South African entrepreneur and talk show master Felicia Mabuza-Suttle.

Dennis Mpale recorded the tribute album Early Mart for Gallo in 1970 . Chris McGregor dedicated his piece Early Bird to him .
