EcoDisc is a DVD that consists of only one layer of polycarbonate instead of the usual two glued polycarbonate discs . By using half as much polycarbonate, it is also lighter and thinner. Furthermore, only half of the usual energy is required in production.

The production process of the EcoDisc emits 52% less carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) than the production of a conventional DVD5 . Furthermore, since it only consists of one layer, no toxic glue is required, so that it is completely recyclable. The capacity of an EcoDisc is the same as that of a conventional DVD5 with 4.7 GB of storage capacity.

Previous versions of the EcoDisc sometimes caused problems with slot-in drives , but these have since been eliminated. In 2009 Testronic Laboratories carried out extensive tests for playability and compatibility on over 240 different players and drives. The result of this series of tests showed a playability of almost 100% (identical to that of a conventional DVD5).

The EcoDisc was developed by EcoDisc Technology AG, a development and research company that does not have its own production facility. EDT licenses the EcoDisc DVD to pressing plants, the necessary upgrade kits for the DVD pressing machines and printing machines are provided and the employees of the respective DVD pressing plants are trained. The EcoDisc technology is registered as a European patent and 3 European patents, 2 international patents and 6 US patents are pending. Patent protection covers markets such as Russia, China, Australia, India and important markets in Africa and South Africa.
