Edaphosphere

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Edaphosphere ( Greek ἔδαφος edaphos seat, basis, soil) is a term from soil science with two meanings.

Ecotopic Edaphosphere

Within a locally delimited ecosystem ( ecotope ), the Edaphosphere denotes those areas of the soil in which there are currently no plant roots. As a result, these soil areas are not directly influenced by plants. Together with the rhizosphere - those soil areas directly adjacent and influenced by plant roots - the ecotopic edaphosphere forms the soils of the ecotope.

A synonym for the ecotopic Edaphosphere is extra-rhizosphere .

Global Edaphosphere

The global Edaphosphere describes the totality of the earth's soils. This terrestrial term is used very rarely. In addition, there can be misunderstandings due to the term ecotopic Edaphosphere - which means only part of the soil in a spatially narrowly enclosed area.

A synonym for the global edaphosphere is the pedosphere .
