Edison Bell Consolidated Phonograph Company

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Edison Bell Consolidated Phonograph Company, Ltd. was a London-based company that made sound recordings and sold phonographs , graphophones and recordings.

history

Chichester Bell , a cousin of Alexander Graham Bell , developed wax-coated cylinders for their graphophone from 1885 together with Charles Sumner Tainter .

On November 30, 1892, they founded the Edison-Bell Consolidated Phonograph Company, Ltd in London , which received exclusive rights to the British phonograph market from the Edison United Phonograph Company . The company was a reconstruction of the Edison-Phonograph Bell Corporation, Ltd , which was itself the successor to the Edison-Phonograph United Company .

The exclusive subsidiary Edisonia, Ltd , founded in 1897 by James Edward Hough , was soon integrated again, as were other parts of the company. Hough took over management in 1898. During this time they were offered the picture with a nipper .

Until 1903 they obtained their phonographs from the Edison Phonograph Works . After the patents expired, the market was open to competitors. Tense business relationships led Edison to deal directly with the National Phonograph Company, Ltd in the UK .

After a fire destroyed cylinder production, the company went bankrupt in 1909 and was taken over by James Edward Hough, who officially became JE Hough, Ltd. founded (and in 1912 also The Winner Records ). The name Edison-Bell remained.

As a result of the economic crisis, the company was taken over by Decca Records in 1932 .
