Edward J. Hart

Edward Joseph Hart (born March 25, 1893 in Jersey City , New Jersey , †  April 20, 1961 in West Allenhurst , New Jersey) was an American politician . Between 1935 and 1955 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Hart attended public schools in his home country as well as Saint Peter's College , which he graduated from in 1913. Between 1913 and 1917 he was secretary of the Excise Commission in Washington, DC ; from 1916 to 1921 he worked for the tax authorities. After studying law at Georgetown University and his admission as a lawyer in 1924, he began to work in Jersey City in 1927 in this profession. Between 1930 and 1934 he was one of the city's legal advisors. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1944 and 1949 he was Chairman of the Democrats at the state level.

In the 1934 congressional elections , Hart was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the 14th  constituency of New Jersey, where he succeeded Oscar L. Auf der Heide on January 3, 1935 . After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1955 . During his time in Congress, further New Deal laws were passed there until 1941 by the federal government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt . Since 1941, the work of Congress was also overshadowed by the events of World War II . The second half of his time in Congress saw the start of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement . In 1951 the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution was ratified. From 1943 to 1945 Hart was chairman of the Committee on War Claims ; then he headed the committee for un-American activities from 1945 to 1947 . From 1949 to 1955 he chaired the Committee on Fisheries and the Merchant Navy.

In 1954, Edward Hart declined to run again. Between 1955 and 1960 he was a member of the State Commission for Public Services. He died in West Allenhurst on April 20, 1961.
