Edward W. Gray

Edward Winthrop Gray (born August 18, 1870 in Jersey City , New Jersey , †  June 10, 1942 in Newark , New Jersey) was an American politician . Between 1915 and 1919 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Gray attended public schools in his home country. From 1894 to 1896 he worked as a newspaper reporter in New York City . He then became the owner and editor of various newspapers in New Jersey. From 1902 to 1904 he was President and Manager of Newark Daily Advertising Publishing Co. He then served as Secretary to Governor Edward C. Stokes between 1904 and 1907 . He was then entrusted with an investigation into the rental market in New Jersey. Until 1908 he was a member of the commission for monitoring the rental situation in his state. Politically, Gray was a member of the Republican Party . From 1908 to 1913 he was secretary of the state board of his party. In 1909, Gray founded Commercial Casualty Insurance Co. in Newark .

In the congressional elections of 1914 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Eugene F. Kinkead on March 4, 1915 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1919 . During this time the First World War fell . In 1918 Edward Gray ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate . In 1924 and 1928 he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the congressional and senate elections. During this time he worked as a publisher, author and lecturer . He died in Newark on June 10, 1942.
