Edwin Holmes (astronomer)

Edwin Holmes (* 1838 or 1839; † 1918 or early 1919) was a British amateur astronomer .

On November 6th, 1892 he discovered the recurring comet 17P / Holmes , for which he was awarded the Donohoe Comet Medal by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific . Holmes actually wanted to observe Jupiter that evening and was surprised when he hit the comet.
