from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The medal badge of honor for outstanding achievements in fire protection was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was donated on February 10, 1983 in one stage by the Council of Ministers of the GDR by its chairman Willi Stoph . It was used to recognize outstanding achievements in the following areas:

  • for exemplary guarantees of fire protection,
  • great bravery in fighting fires while protecting the lives of citizens of the GDR,
  • in preventing major damage,
  • significant results in the development of fire protection in the GDR as well
  • international cooperation between fire protection bodies.

The medal itself can only be awarded once to one and the same person or collective, in particular to members and collectives of the fire services . Also other citizens and collectives, institutions and citizens of other countries. The first award of the honorary mark took place on the occasion of the People's Police Day on July 1, 1984. In addition to the medal, the entrusted received a certificate and a financial contribution, the amount of which was based on his performance and was not explicitly regulated. For groups of up to 10 members, each group member received a certificate and a medal, for groups of more than 10 people only one medal and a certificate. Otherwise, other institutions did not receive any financial support.

Proposal authorization

The right to make proposals, which should lead to the award of the honorary badge, was incumbent on the Deputy Minister of the Interior, the head of the fire department and the heads of the district authorities of the German People's Police. The necessary suggestions were to be submitted by this group of people to the Ministry of the Interior by March 1 of each year or immediately after the work was completed. The final decision, however, was made by the Minister of the Interior and Chief of the German People's Police. This also awarded the medal, whereby the maximum number of awards was limited to 200 annually.

Appearance and wearing style

The gold-plated medal with a diameter of 35 mm shows on its obverse on a malino-colored inner surface a gold-colored fire helmet in front of a fire ax and a nozzle. The lower edge of the medal is the state coat of arms of the GDR, which is wrapped in gold-colored oak leaves and extends over the edge of the medal. The medal itself is underlaid with golden oak leaves and shows the inscription: FOR OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE IN FIRE PROTECTION . The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, is smooth. The medal was worn on a malino-red pentagonal clasp in which a black, red and gold hem is woven on both sides of the upper left chest. The interim clasp corresponds to the same design, but shows in the middle the miniature of the fire helmet along with the fire ax and nozzle.
