Egg millet

Eggs millet is very often made of silver millet produced

As eggs millet means a special mixture of millet and raw egg yolk, which is used in particular for the breeding of young birds.

background

Many birds, which normally mainly use seeds as food, also feed their nestlings insects after they hatch from the egg. Young birds need this protein-rich food in order to grow normally. This proves to be problematic in the offspring of pet birds. For example, Gouldian finches kept in captivity regularly do not accept the mealworm larvae or ant pupae offered to them . In the wild, however, the young birds are fed free-flying termites , soft beetles and spiders. In order to ensure that the young birds receive sufficient protein-rich food, egg millet was developed by Japanese breeders in the 1950s.

Manufacturing method

For the production of egg millet, larger millet varieties that have already been bought peeled are squeezed a little. Then a fresh egg yolk is whipped and mixed with 100 to 150 grams of peeled millet. Spread out thinly, this mixture is dried and then crumbled. Millet stored in a dry and cool place can be used for two weeks.
