Rapid traverse

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The rapid positioning movement of the slides on machine tools when the tools are not engaged is called rapid traverse . As soon as the tool processes the workpiece, it is referred to as feed .

Depending on the machine type, speeds of up to 1400 m / min can be achieved, but the slides usually move at a maximum of around 6-100 m / min. In order to be able to take advantage of a high speed, the brakes must also be able to regulate the slide to the feed speed within a very short time. Furthermore, the machine must absorb the high dynamic loads without swinging up. Modern high-speed linear drives can only be operated at around 60% of their power on some machines, as the entire construction is excited to vibrate in such a way that entire machine halls vibrate.
