Railway accident at Monorierdő

In the railway accident in Monorierdő , a passenger train from Cegléd ran into the last wagon of an Intercity from Nyíregyháza to Budapest on October 6, 2008 at 10:20 am near Monorierdő in Hungary . The accident was caused by a faulty signal and a mistake by the engine driver.

consequences

Four passengers died in the accident, three of them on site and one in the hospital. 27 passengers had to be cared for in the hospital. The driver of the passenger train's control car survived by running into the passenger car to warn passengers after realizing that the accident could not be prevented.

Pál Szabó, the Hungarian Minister of Transport, offered to resign shortly after the accident, as did Miklós Kamarás, the President of the Hungarian State Railways MÁV. Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány accepted the resignation, but not the resignation of István Heinczinger, MÁV's Chief Executive Officer.
