Sporniak railway accident

The Sporniak railway accident was the flank of an express train in a freight train in December 1917 in Sporniak station , Powiat Lubelski , Poland . 17 people died.

Starting position

The accident occurred on a single-track line that was operated by Army Railroad North during the First World War . An express train was on its way from Kovel to Demblin . As planned , it was supposed to pass through Sporniak station . However, its entry signal showed "Halt" because a freight train coming from the opposite direction was just entering the station.

the accident

The locomotive driver of the express train overlooked the signal showing "Halt" and drove through the Sporniak station as planned. At the end of the station he collided with the last car of the freight train that was just arriving. The freight car was thrown on one side, the locomotive of the express train and its first four cars on the other side.

consequences

17 people died, 56 were also seriously and 27 were slightly injured.
