Electrostatic motor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An electrostatic motor is an electrical machine that uses electrical fields to convert electrical work into mechanical work. In electrostatic motors, the force exerted on a charge by an electric field is converted into motion . The electrostatic motor is a special form of the electric motor . Its use is limited to experimental applications because of the relatively high voltage and poor efficiency . For macroscopic applications, the voltage required is several kilovolts . It is noteworthy that the motor can develop its full torque at standstill without current flowing. There are possible applications in nanotechnology , since the motor can be manufactured with a 2-dimensional structure. The electrostatic drive concept is one of the most important drive principles of microactuators .
