Elevador Lacerda, Salvador, Brazil

The Elevador Lacerda is a high-speed elevator that connects the lower town with the upper town of the Brazilian metropolis Salvador . It is named after its builder, the entrepreneur Antônio Lacerda .

Original construction

Construction began in October 1869 using building materials imported from Great Britain. On December 8, 1873, the building was inaugurated with two individual hydraulic elevators for 23 passengers each, initially under the name Elevador Hidráulico da Conceição . The name was changed to Elevador Lacerda in 1896.

Extensions

So far, four major technical extensions and inspections have been carried out:

  • From July 1906 to January 1907, the elevator was electrified.
  • In 1930 the two old elevator cars were replaced by four new ones, each with a capacity of 27 people. Two of the new cabins were housed in a second tower of the building, which was also newly built, which is set into the mountainside and protrudes from the rock - in contrast to the better visible first tower, which reaches down to the level of the lower town.
  • At the beginning of the 1980s, a review of the entire structure was carried out.
  • In 1997 an inspection of the entire electrics and electronics followed.
