Emergency Conditions

Emergency Conditions (Engl. Emergency conditions ), with EMERGCON abbreviated, refers to a type emergency alarm status of the US armed forces in response to a so-called ICBM -attack (air attack with missiles).

During an EMERGCON, all armed forces are transferred to DEFCON 1.

The two EMERGCON levels

  • DEFENSE EMERGENCY : A large-scale attack on an overseas US armed forces or allied forces, or an overt attack of any kind directly on the United States, will be confirmed by the commander of a unitary or designated command or higher authority.
  • AIR DEFENSE EMERGENCY is an emergency level proclaimed by the leading commander of the North American Air Defense Command. It signals that a direct attack by enemy aircraft or missiles on the United States, Canada or US facilities in Greenland is likely, imminent or already underway.
