Emphysema

In medicine, emphysema is an excess or an unfamiliar presence of air.

Depending on the location of the air accumulation, one differentiates:

• Emphysema
• Skin emphysema : can develop in the event of illness or after injury to air-containing organs, less often due to an infection with gas-producing pathogens
• Mediastinal emphysema forms in the space between the lungs ( mediastinum )
• Orbitaemphysem in orbit fractures ( fractures of bones of the eye socket), especially the medial wall
