The term “products (and services) in need of explanation” is mainly used in marketing and advertising to define a product category that is particularly complex - in contrast to less complex products, e.g. B. everyday use - excels.

While potentially every product needs to be explained or at least needs to be explained, products labeled as needing to be explained are on average more complex (e.g. in their application). The majority of the population tend to be less familiar with them because they are mostly not consciously and actively experienced part of their everyday life. The target group of products in need of explanation are often smaller and characterized by a particular level of specialist knowledge. The products that require explanation come from e.g. B. from the fields of industry and technology .

Products that require explanation are predominantly business-to-business products that are offered to companies by other companies (versus end-user products). Nonetheless, the following applies: The attribute “in need of explanation” is assigned to products or services and is therefore not irrefutably justified in the product itself. Products that require explanation pose particular challenges for agencies and companies in terms of communication due to their higher degree of complexity.
