Feeding tube

As a feeding tube , is known a hose which is inserted in a patient's gastrointestinal tract to him with tube feeding if he himself can not take in sufficient food or liquid to supply.

Frequently used are:

  • nasogastric tube that is advanced through the nose, throat, and esophagus into the stomach. This technique is used when there is only a short-term disturbance (between two and four weeks) in food intake .
  • Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG tube) to provide long-term tube feeding to a patient.
  • Percutaneous endoscopic jejunostomy , used to provide long-term tube feeding to a patient when a gastric emptying disorder is present.
