Error in forma
An error in forma ( Latin for formal error ) denotes a fallacy , a formally logical reasoning error. The error in re ( Latin: error in the thing itself ), on the other hand, denotes the factual error, the error with regard to the essence, with regard to the content.
The distinction goes back to Georg Hagemann, according to which the error "[is] a false judgment which is considered to be true, or a true judgment which is believed to be false". The formal error consists "in a judgment which has come about through merely logically incorrect thinking". The material error consists in the contradiction between the content of the judgment and the object.
