Eugene A. Meier

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eugen Anton Meier (born August 4, 1933 in Basel ; † May 4, 2004 in Naters ) was a Swiss author of writings on the history of the city of Basel, councilor and local sports functionary.

Life

Eugen A. Meier completed a library apprenticeship at the University Library of Basel . In the 1960s he was an assistant in the Basel-Stadt State Archives , and also the second stock exchange clerk at the Basel Stock Exchange .

Although he was an autodidact in the field of history, he wrote numerous books and essays on topics from Basel's local history in town and country from the 1960s onwards. He also worked as an editor or publisher. His publications were well received by a large readership because of their catchy writing style and their diverse subject matter. However, they are controversial among specialist historians, as sources are missing and quotations from historical sources are often incorrectly reproduced. Meier's books, however, are regarded as a treasure trove for historical picture sources, which are otherwise difficult to access because they are often privately owned.

From 1972 to 1988 and again from 1992 Meier politicized in the Grand Council , initially for the CVP , later for the DSP . He was also a member of the civic council and the bank council of the Basler Kantonalbank .

In addition, he was involved in many areas of social life in his city. He was a founding member of the Basler Ferries Foundation and was the governor of the ship's guild . He was the superior of the Kleinbasler Ehrengesellschaft zum Rebhaus and 1986/1987 Chairman of the Master of the Basel guilds and honor societies .

He was also particularly interested in sport: as a teenager he played football at FC Nordstern , in 1956 he joined RTV 1879 , in 1957 he helped found FC Heimatland, and in 1977 he was co-initiator of FC Stradivari. From 1972 to 1984 he played in FC Grossrat. For decades he was a member of the St. Jakob Stadium, the owner of the Joggeli . He was a member of the Basel Sports Commission and on the board of the IG Basel Sports Associations and was one of the major sponsors of the Swiss Sports Museum .

In 1994, Meier was honored as an Ehrespalebärglemer for his services to Basel.

Meier died at the age of 71 in his Upper Valais domicile, and he found his final resting place on the Wolfgottesacker in Basel . In his will, he bequeathed a large part of his fortune (over 2.5 million francs gross) to a foundation that is supposed to delight particularly needy Basel residents with a Christmas present. The Eugen A. Meier Foundation is administered by the Basel community.
