from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The European Fund for Adjustment to Globalization (EGF), also known as the Globalization Fund for short , is a financial instrument of the European Union (EU) for the one-time, temporary support of employees in regions and industries "who are due to far-reaching structural changes in the world trade structure due to the Globalization have become unemployed. ”The Globalization Fund complements the European Social Fund (ESF) and the EU's PROGRESS program, which runs from 2007 to 2013 .

The globalization fund was established by Regulation (EC) No. 1927/2006 of December 20, 2006 on the basis of Art. 159 subparagraph 3 of the EC Treaty (today's Art. 175 (3) AEU Treaty ). In force January 2007. It is endowed with up to 500 million euros annually, which are to be used for professional reintegration. It is estimated that around 35,000 to 50,000 employees can benefit from these funds.

The fund finances measures that support the job search, individually adapted further training measures, steps towards self-employment and business start-ups, mobility allowances, allowances for disadvantaged or older workers so that they are available again or again in the labor market and other temporary "supplementary payments" .

The funds of the fund have to be requested by the EU member states and are only released in cases of at least 1,000 redundancies.

Germany submitted an application for funding for the first time in 2007. It concerned the employees affected by the bankruptcy of the BenQ company . The EU then approved a total of around 12.7 million euros from the fund.

In 2011, former employees of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG received more than eight million euros in assistance from the EGF for further training and job search. The company's order book had collapsed as a result of the economic and financial crisis.
