Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kretinga

The Evangelical Lutheran Church is a neo-Gothic church building in Kretinga in Lithuania . It was built from 1895 to 1899 and belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lithuania . It's on Rathausplatz.

history

The place Kretinga belonged to Lithuania and thus since 1795 to the Russian Empire . The border with East Prussia (Memelland) ran along the edge of the town . In 1808, a Lutheran congregation was founded in a residential building following a corresponding approval from the Tsar in 1802. The services initially took place at different locations, until in 1850 a house was converted into a church. In 1889 this was given a bell tower. In 1895 the building burned down.

From 1896 to 1899 a new church was built in the neo-Gothic style. Today there is a very small evangelical congregation in the church. Concerts take place regularly, often on the historic baroque organ.

Architecture and equipment

The church is a neo-Gothic brick building with field stones in the outer masonry. The tower comes from the construction time.

There are wood carvings inside. The biggest attraction is a baroque organ from 1785, which Johann Preuss from Königsberg had built. This was moved here from the church in Werden in 1898 and is the only surviving work by this famous organ builder.
