The EventDB is an extension to the Icinga monitoring software published as free software , but it can also be operated as a stand-alone solution. The aim of the EventDB is to collect and evaluate occurring events (SNMP traps, Syslog messages, Windows EventLog, ...) from the network in a central database.

functionality

Network events are transmitted to the EventDB server via various channels and written to a MySQL database in a normalized manner. The events are evaluated using a web frontend. Within the front end there is the possibility to view, filter and confirm messages. Confirmed messages are considered completed and are no longer displayed in the interface. To be informed about events that have occurred, there is a plug-in that creates the link between Nagios and the EventDB. The Nagios plugin developed for this purpose evaluates the entries contained in the database according to criteria and reports a WARNING or CRITICAL status depending on the frequency of the messages and the specified threshold values. When checking with the Nagios plugin, the host, message text, source of the message and the number of messages can be filtered.

features

The EventDB runs completely independently even without Nagios, the coupling to the Icinga monitoring system takes place using a Nagios plug-in. The messages are viewed via a PHP-based web interface. The components used for the EventDB are all common and have been tested many times, thus ensuring smooth operation of the platform. The flexible input interfaces, also called adapters, contain the logic for normalizing the data, so messages of any kind can be managed centrally.
