No. 557 of the series with the title page: Lays of Marie de France and others (Eng. Lais der Marie de France ). Introduced & translated by Eugene Mason
Frontispiece to an edition of the medieval game Everyman ( Everyman ), published by John Skot (c. 1530)

The Everyman's Library is a series of books in the English language initially published by JM Dent . The uniform series was founded in 1906 by the editor and publisher Joseph Malaby Dent (1849–1926) with the intention of being able to offer a collection of standard books on various subjects at a price that would make them affordable for everyone. The series grew rapidly under the editorship of Ernest P. Rhys (1859-1946).

The complete works are divided into different sub-series: Biography (biography), Classical (classics), Essays & Belles-Lettres (Essays & Belles-Lettres), Fiction (fiction), History (history), Oratory (oratory), Philosophy & Theology ( Philosophy & Theology), Poetry & Drama (poetry & drama), Reference (reference), Romance (romance), Science (science), Travel & Topography (travel & topography) and For Young People (for young people). An Everyman's Encyclopaedia was also published in the series .

The motto of the series is taken from the medieval game Everyman , a Middle English morality Everyman (in modern English: Summoning of Everyman ), in which the figure of Knowledge (knowledge ) says to Everyman (everyone):

Everyman, I will go with thee and be thy guide,
In thy most need to go by thy side.
Everyone, I'll go with you and guide you
To be by your side in times of greatest deprivation.

This quote appears on all covers of the Everyman's Library volumes.
