Extended Service Set

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An Extended Service Set ( ESS ) is part of some wireless local area networks . Each ESS contains a Basic Service Set (BSS) or several coupled BSS and is always represented on the Logical Link Control layer like a single BSS.

In order to enable a corresponding coupling, an ESS has a Distribution System (DS). This distribution system by specification to specify avoids the standard 802.11 IEEE explicitly. However, a DS is not uncommon, because every BSS with a portal to other standards such as Ethernet requires a DS and is an ESS.
