history

State statistical data has been collected in Russia since 1802. In 1927 the Central Statistical Office of the USSR was established.

Goskomstat (Russian: Государственный комитет по статистике) was the central authority for statistics in the Soviet Union . Goskomstat was founded in 1987 to replace the central statistical administration while maintaining the same basic functions in the collection, analysis, publication and distribution of government statistics, including economic, social and demographic statistics. This renaming meant a formal downgrade of the agency's status.

Goskomstat not only supervised the collection and analysis of state statistics, but were also responsible for planning and carrying out the population and housing censuses. It conducted seven such censuses in 1926, 1937, 1939, 1959, 1970, 1979, and 1989. The agency was known for the low reliability of the data it collected and for its strong political influence.

Goskomstat became the current authority in 2004 after several changes. From March 2012 to April 2017, the authority was under the control of the Russian government and since then again under the Ministry of Economic Development.
