FUDGE ( F reeform U niform Do -it-yourself G aming E ngine) is a kind of modular system for pen - & - paper role-playing games .

It is not a ready-made universal system , but provides conventions, suggestions, and ideas to create your own. FUDGE places great emphasis on flexibility and makes it very easy to play different genres. It was invented by Steffan O'Sullivan in 1995 and has since been distributed by Gray Ghost Press. FUDGE is available as a print version or as a free download. A translation into German has been available since 2000 and is also available free of charge.

FUDGE is considered to be the world's largest free (universal) role-playing game . Most commercial role-playing games have conversion aids that allow you to play with the FUDGE system in the world of these role-playing games.

The special thing about FUDGE is the word-based representation of the skill and attribute levels. In contrast to other role-playing systems, there are no characters with "sword fight 8" but "great swordsmen". This is easier to understand, especially for beginners, and links the "values" more closely with the game world. (A character can say, "I'm a great swordsman" but not, "I'm an 8th level swordsman")

Fate is a further development of FUDGE .
