The expression weakness (17th century; from French ) is a Gallicism and denotes a tendency or preference that can become vice or strength . It is mostly used in the form of having a weakness for something .

It originated from the Latin flebilis (" worth to be lamented"). In French, this became le faible ("the weakness", "the weak side") through nouns .

In the context of cognac production soft spot called (in the sense of vulnerability makers ) the - often several times - diluting the alcoholic distillates with distilled and deionized water to obtain the final, drinkable mixing ratio.
