Fayetteville is a small American town in Lincoln County in southern Tennessee . It is the county seat of Lincoln County. Fayetteville has around 7,000 residents on an area of 19.0 square kilometers.

Fayetteville was founded in 1809. The city is named after Fayetteville , North Carolina .
Demographics
The 6,994 residents of Fayetteville found in the 2000 census lived in 3,054 households; including 1,804 families. The population density was 368 per square kilometer. 3,370 residential units were recorded in the village. Among the population, 71.4 percent were white, 26.2 percent African American, 0.3 percent American Indian, 0.3 percent Asian, and 0.4 percent of other races; 1.4 percent said they belonged to several ethnic groups.
Of the 3,054 households, 24.5 percent had children under the age of 18; 37.8 percent were single households. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.81 people.
The population was distributed among 21.2 percent under 18 years, 8.1 percent from 18 to 24 years, 22.9 percent from 25 to 44 years, 22.1 percent from 45 to 64 years and 25.7 percent from 65 years or older. The median age was 43 years.
