The spring-damper unit , often called a spring strut, is a component on the chassis of motor vehicles. A hydraulic telescopic shock absorber carries two spring plates between which a helical spring is clamped.

Unlike MacPherson struts , spring-damper units do not transmit any lateral forces and are usually pivoted at both ends (in rubber). They are used, among other things, on wheel suspensions with double wishbones or swing arms. You only need one suspension point each on the axle and body, instead of two with separate springs and dampers. Assembly is easier, but changing the damper is a bit more complicated.
