Federal Steam Navigation Company

The Federal Steam Navigation Company Ltd. (FSNCo) was a British liner shipping company. It existed from 1894 to 1983.

history

The company's roots lay in the liquidated shipping company Money Wigram & Sons , which was taken over by Allan Hughes in 1894. Initially, Hughes changed the company's name to King Steam Navigation , as the first ships were called the Celtic King and Maori King . From 1895 the shipping company then operated under the name Federal Steam Navigation Company Ltd . In 1904 a joint service to New Zealand, Australia and South Africa was opened together with the shipping company Houlder Brothers . In 1906, the Shire Line entered the community service, which was then run as the Federal-Houlder-Shire Line. On this service came in 1909 to the eleven Federal ships seven units of the Shire Line, four from Houlder and two chartered ships of the British India Steam Navigation Company . After Federal Steam Navigation was taken over by the New Zealand Shipping Company in 1912 , Houlder Brothers withdrew from the community service, which was then continued as Federal & Shire Line until the outbreak of World War I. In September 1916, the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) took over the majority of the shares in the New Zealand Shipping Company and the Federal Steam Navigation Company, but both the ships and the shipping companies retained their independence until 1973. When P&O was reorganized into general cargo shipping, passenger services and bulk cargo transport in 1971, all controlled shipping companies and ships were quickly integrated into the new structure, but the Federal Steam Navigation Company continued to exist as a ship-owning company until 1983.
