Fencibles

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fencibles were a British infantry and cavalry militia.

They emerged in the 15th century and were brought into being in the event of wars and emergencies to free regular troops for deployment abroad. Their officer positions were awarded to deserving officers on half pay. They were drawn up by the lord lieutenants of the counties . In contrast to the Yeomanry , they were also allowed to be used outside the counties.

The Fencibles were abolished in 1806.
